The Stonecutter's Wisdom

Once, there was a stonecutter who was dissatisfied with himself and his position in life. One day, he passed a wealthy merchant's house and saw many fine possessions. The stonecutter became envious and wished he could be that merchant. To his surprise, he suddenly became the merchant, enjoying more luxuries than he ever imagined.

However, he noticed a powerful official being carried by servants and thought, "I wish I could be that official." Instantly, he became the official, but soon he saw the sun beating down on everyone, even the powerful official. He thought, "The sun is more powerful than I. I wish I could be the sun." He then became the sun, but soon a cloud covered him, blocking his rays. He thought, "The cloud is mightier than the sun. I wish I could be the cloud."

He became the cloud, but soon he felt himself being pushed by the wind. Realizing the wind's power, he wished to be the wind. He became the wind, but as he blew across the land, he came up against a mountain that he could not move. "The mountain is more powerful than the wind," he thought. "I wish I could be the mountain."

Then he became the mountain, but as he stood strong, he heard the sound of a hammer striking a chisel into stone. He looked down and saw a stonecutter chipping away at him. Realizing that even as a mountain, he was vulnerable to a stonecutter, he wished to be himself again.
