The Race That Never Existed
The first rays of sunlight had barely touched the forest when a young deer sprang out of the meadow. Every morning began with the same determination. It would race across winding trails, leap over fallen logs, and sprint through open fields as though an invisible finish line waited somewhere ahead.
The young deer believed life was a competition. Whenever another deer crossed the stream before it, it promised to run faster the next day. If a stag jumped higher or stood taller with magnificent antlers, admiration quickly turned into comparison. No matter how much it achieved, someone always seemed better.
While the forest celebrated each new season, the deer barely noticed. Flowers bloomed after the rains, butterflies floated gently over the meadows, birds welcomed every sunrise with cheerful songs, and squirrels chased one another through towering trees. Yet the young deer saw none of it. Its eyes were always searching for someone ahead.
One evening, exhausted after another endless chase, the deer stopped beside a quiet lake. As it bent down to drink, an old stag standing nearby smiled and asked, "You look tired. Why do you keep running?" The young deer sighed and replied, "Because there is always someone faster, stronger, or better than me."
The old stag listened patiently before asking a question that seemed almost too simple.
"Who declared the race?"
The young deer looked around. There was no starting line, no finish line, no judges, and no prize waiting at the end. There was only the forest, calm and beautiful, exactly as it had always been. Nearby, rabbits played without worrying who was quickest. Birds sang because they loved the morning, not because anyone was listening. Even the river flowed peacefully without trying to overtake another stream.
In that quiet moment, the young deer realised something it had never questioned before.
The race had never existed.
It had spent months chasing an illusion that no one else could even see.
The next morning, the deer stepped into the meadow once again. It still loved to run, but this time it ran because the cool breeze felt refreshing and the soft earth welcomed every step. It paused to watch the sunlight dance on the leaves, smiled at the rabbits crossing its path, and listened to the birds whose songs had always been there, patiently waiting to be heard.
Nothing in the forest had changed.
Only the deer had.
As the seasons passed, the young deer was no longer known as the fastest. Instead, it became known as the one who was always at peace. And somehow, without trying to outrun anyone, it had finally reached the place it had been searching for all along.
Flash: Every day, we compare our journey with someone else's and unknowingly create races that no one asked us to run. The moment we stop looking sideways, we begin to notice the beauty, growth, and purpose already present in our own lives.
Moral: Life is not about finishing before someone else. It is about walking your own path with gratitude, purpose, and peace.
The loudest race is often the one that exists only inside our minds!!
